Tether (USDT) is a useful crypto whose value roughly mirrors the value of the U.S. Dollar. The idea was to create a stable cryptocurrency that could be used like digital dollars.
Tether is backed by the USD so that one Tether is exactly equal to one dollar. It is commonly used to convert other cryptocurrencies to USD.
It's unusual for concern to be raised over a single cryptocurrency being labeled as a risk for the entire family of digital currencies. It can be considered sufficiently risky to be heralded as one of the potential pins that might one day burst the bitcoin bubble.
Tether is controversial because it's price is Tethered to the dollar.
